Day 1: On the (very steep) Trail of Adventure and Serendipity in SanFrancisco's Chinatown

We arrived in San Francisco on time and Uber whisked us to our hotel near Fisherman's Wharf. Since we knew a storm was coming the next day, we hit the streets right away. We have been using this map to get around Ssn Francisco;  http://www.mapshop.com/Travel_Maps/Pacific_US_Maps/San%20Francisco/san-francisco-map.asp
Our first destination was a Chinese tea store in Chinatown.  It really made us feel like we were back in Shanghai. It is easily twice the size of Chinatown in New York City.

Our tea visit was very informative.  Our host told Patrice she was murdering her tea. It should not be made with boiling water, temp should be 180 degrees, not 212! She was quite a character and a pretty good salesperson.  It would take a pretty good spiel to get me to cough up 33 bucks for a quarter pound bag of tea. We ended up buying something less expensive as a souvenir.  You can see her in the picture at her tea tasting bar.

The streets of Chinatown are very narrow, but our next stop was reeeaaally tucked away in an alley. Our good friend Mary, the travel blogger told us about a place you can watch them make fortune cookies. We would never have found it if she hadn't told us about it..  Here's a picture of its unassuming fascade.. and the inside..

We walked to a restaurant that Mary recommended in Little Italy, but it was closed.  It was the steepest urban hike we have ever done.
On the way back to the hotel, we discovered a funky little bistro called Melt that advertised live jazz. We stopped for a glass of wine and got to listen to some great music. We struck up a conversation with a guy who played drums for Santana and we found out later he's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His name was Chepito Areas.
