Exploring Centro and Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires

Today was our first full day in BA.  We got our ferry tickets for our future trip over to Uruguay then walked half a mile down a pedestrian only street to the heart of Buenos Aires, the Plaza de Mayo. Along the way we got a chance to see some beautiful architecture like this street enclosed with a geodesic dome. It's interesting to us why many places still have their Christmas decorations up on January 6th.
And lots of early 20th century buildings like these:
We finally made it to the Plaza de Mayo. In addition to being the center of BA, it is also a popular place for demonstrations. We saw a riot fence erected across the Plaza and several police buses. I also saw something I have never seen before; a police water cannon.  All this preparation was staged in front of the Casa Rosada, the Pink House. This was the seat of power for many years and the center balcony was the famous setting for Evita.
All-in-all we had a great day in BA. It's still outside our comfort zone due to the size of the city and the fact that very few people speak any English.

I would be a bit afraid also! How have you managed with your Spanish thus far? We have generally been able to make get our message across even when our foreign language skills have been lacking. Hope that is the case for you. Sounds like your host may be helpful in explaining any questions you may have after a day of walking around.

Were those really Chritmas decorations? Many Christians celebrate till the Epiphany and I think it is January 5. Maybe they were getting ready to take down....but those balls look like they stay all the time.
