I See Dead People (at Recoleta Cemetary)

We started our day in one of BA's tonier neighborhoods, Recoleta. Lunch is a big meal here so we had it on a nice terrace overlooking a park near the cemetery. La Biela became famous in the 50's and 60's as a place where race drivers hung out. This is me posing with one of them.

It's always hard for me to believe that a cemetery could be a major tourist attraction. It certainly is that way in New Orleans and even more so in Buenos Aires. The Recoleta cemetery has been around since 1822 and apparently it's THE place to be buried.

This church is near the entrance.

The entrance to the cemetery has "Rest in Peace" at the top.

On the other side of the entrance it says Expect God... Or God is coming for the rest of you sooner or later! Now there's a happy thought.

Here are a variety of pictures of some of the interesting mausoleums we saw on the tour:

This is our tour guide telling us some interesting stories about the people buried here.

Here are some other mausoleums. A number of them have stained glass skylights. Some are in such bad repair it looks like the occupants want to move.  The last one is Evita's.

It's hard to believe This relatively humble mausoleum is Evita's. The only thing that sets it apart are the flowers that are always on it.  She's buried here with other members of her family.

Tonite we're going out to visit some tango clubs, so more about that on tomorrow's blog entry.
